Artist Statement

After having my two children Olivia and Oskar my passion and interests began to change. As a child I had watched generations of women in my family sew anything and everything. That included clothing, quilts, drapes, furniture, and toys for all of the kids in the family. If you could dream it my mom could make it. My mother, Eileen Buddie became both my teacher and my business partner and we began developing Olivia’s Kloset.

We knew we wanted to sew but we didn't really know what direction we wanted to take. We had many ideas but nothing really formed until my mother had made a winter hat for my daughter Olivia. We were looking at it and made a joke that “wouldn't it be funny if we put eyeballs on the hat”. Little did we know, in that moment, on what seemed an ordinary day that a simple joke would grow into a 15 year business in counting. We began with hats but it didn’t stop there, each year we began to develop new creations. The selections grew into dolls, puppets, chapstick holders, boogie monsters, purses, coats, vests, sweatshirts, dresses, pillow quilts, money munchers and most recently breaking into year round hats is our cotton bucket hats. The one thing we were certain of is we never wanted to feel like a factory. When you see our items most of them are one of a kind or they are a limited edition with the exception of our first three characters Nix, Hektor, and Tommy Zombie. There is no shortage of imagination and silliness between my mother and I, so we like to keep things constantly new, changing, growing into the next adventure.

We currently travel all over the United States during show season and spend our winters creating, daydreaming, reflecting, and resting up for the next season.

Olivia’s Kloset is a family business in every sense of the word. My mother, Eileen Buddie is my partner in designing, building, and dreaming. My father, Len Buddie, taught me about the business side of Olivia's Kloset and is my financial advisor. My daughter Olivia Karas designs our business cards and created our website. Oskar Karas frequently designs some of our monsters as well as comes up with ideas for products. All of my children, Olivia and Oskar Karas, and Irish Grotjahn have been my inspiration and my reason for everything. Finally, my husband and best friend Nick Grotjahn, who not only assists me in sewing and cutting things out but has been a constant support in believing in me and encouraging me every step of the way. I feel incredibly lucky to have an amazing support system, magnificent teachers and to be surrounded by the love and inspiration of my family members. I am forever grateful.
